FAQ

What can you do for your immune system to improve?

The human body consists of trillions of cells. These cells combine to form organs or tissues that serve specific functions. Another cell takes its place when a cell dies. Hormones, which are chemical signals that allow cells to communicate with one another, enable them to do so. Hormones control all bodily functions, including growth, development, metabolism, immunity and immune system.

Hormones, chemicals that are secreted throughout the body by glands, are chemicals. They travel through bloodstreams and act as messengers that control the function of our bodies. Some hormones are produced internally while others are made outside of the body.

Hormone production occurs when hormone-producing cells release their contents into your bloodstream. Once released, hormones move through the body until they reach their target organ. In some cases hormones can remain active for only a few hours. Others hormones remain active longer and still have an influence on the body's functioning long after they leave bloodstream.

Some hormones are made in large quantities. Others are produced in smaller amounts.

Some hormones are only produced at certain times in your life. For example, estrogen is made during puberty. Estrogen aids women in developing breasts, maintaining bone density and preventing osteoporosis. It is also known to promote hair growth and keep skin soft and smooth.

What does the meaning of "vitamin?"

Vitamins are organic compounds that can be found in foods. Vitamins allow us to absorb nutrients from food. Vitamins cannot be produced by the body. They must be acquired from food.

There are two types: water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins. Water soluble vitamins dissolve easily in water. Examples include vitamin C,B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6 (pyridoxine), folic acid, biotin, pantothenic acid, and choline. Fat-soluble vitamins can be stored in the liver or in fatty tissue. Examples include vitamin D, E, K, A, and beta carotene.

Vitamins are classified according their biological activity. There are eight major groups of vitamins:

  • A - essential for normal growth and maintenance of health.
  • C - vital for proper nerve function, and energy production.
  • D - Vital for healthy bones and teeth
  • E is necessary for good vision, reproduction.
  • K - Essential for healthy muscles and nerves.
  • P - essential for strong bones, teeth and tendons
  • Q - Aids digestion and iron absorption
  • R - Red blood cells are made from red blood cells.

The recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamins varies depending on age, gender, and physical condition. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has established the RDA values.

For adults over 19, the RDA for vitaminA is 400 micrograms per daily. For fetal development, pregnant women need 600 mg per day. Children ages 1-8 require 900 micrograms per day. Children under 1 year old require 700 micrograms daily, while infants over one year old need 500 micrograms every day. This decreases between 9 and 12 months.

Children between the ages 1--18 years old who are overweight or obese require 800 micrograms per Day, while those who are overweight or obese need 1000 micrograms. To meet their nutritional needs, children underweight and obese require 1200 micrograms a day.

Children 4-8 years old who have anemia must consume 2200 micrograms of Vitamin C daily.

2000 micrograms daily is required for adults over 50 to maintain their general health. Mothers who are pregnant, nursing, or have a high nutrient need will require 3000 micrograms a day.

1500 micrograms are required daily by adults over 70 because they lose approximately 10% of their muscle each decade.

Women who are pregnant or nursing need more than the RDA. Pregnant women need 4000 micrograms per dayduring pregnancy and 2500 micrograms per day after delivery. Breastfeeding mothers need to consume 5000 micrograms every day when breastmilk has been produced.
